Tonight, my mom prepared spinach and we were discussing what spices go well with spinach. I google'd a bit and I found 'nutmeg' on some sites, but it seems like a strange combo to me.

Honestly, I have no idea, so help me out please :)

Nutmeg works in lots of places you might not expect, and it's a really popular addition to cream/bechamel sauces like you'd find on creamed spinach.

Other things that are classic with spinach:

  • Garlic
  • Hot pepper flakes
  • Lemon/vinegar

I like nutmeg in my bechamel sauce, but I meant spinach without sauce/creme/... –  Mien Feb 24 '11 at 18:12
Well, you gotta figure it doesn't go BADLY with the spinach if it works in creamed spinach (which is where I was trying to get to, but was unclear I guess). –  bikeboy389 Feb 24 '11 at 19:42

Nutmeg works great with spinach...just a bit. You don't want it shouting "NUTMEG!" at you.

i agree -- nutmeg and spinach together is FANTASTIC, but just a bit goes a long way. add a bit of gruyére cheese and you have something really special... –  franko Feb 24 '11 at 20:10
@franko: thanks for the tip, I'll try it :) –  Mien Feb 24 '11 at 20:26
Gruyere makes everything special! –  Denny Conn Feb 24 '11 at 23:24

There are some brilliant Indian dishes that involve spinach. They's normally have "palak" in the name, like Palak Paneer or Aloo Palak.

They use Cumin, cloves, garlic and cardamom to great effect. And the spinach just loves it.

If you want it fresh, Roquefort is brilliant in a salad with spinach, green apples and a simple vinnaigrette sauce.

Nutmeg pairs well with traditional foods such as spinach. The taste of them blends so well and the food is stimulating.

Try a tiny pinch of ground cloves. This is the secret ingredient in the creamed spinach at the Capital Grill.
