What knives are “required” for a serious home kitchen?
What should I look for in a good, multi-purpose chef's knife?

I am looking to buy a knife set and want to know what to look for. What brands are best? Does it matter where the knives are made? What types of steel should I be looking for? What other attributes are important?

Possible dupe. Also look at this question. – BaffledCook Jan 31 '12 at 21:57
The second question is pretty useful. I was still left though with some of my questions unanswered. – anton2g Jan 31 '12 at 22:07
Wasn't there another question explicitly about knife sets? I swear I remember one but can't find it. – Jefromi Jan 31 '12 at 22:28
As noted in your previous question, we don't allow shopping recommendations, so don't ask which brands are "best". The linked duplicates have quite a bit of information on important attributes as well as high carbon vs. stainless steel. – Aaronut Feb 1 '12 at 0:30
