Our kid is 10 yo and has to stay home alone during the afternoon as we both are working and there's nobody else to take care of him.

Can you suggest some simple cold meals we could leave him to eat, not involving heating of any kind?

Welcome to the site! Unfortunately, this question is much too broad to be a good fit for our site. We're more about specific questions which someone can try to write a single good answer for - see the faq. You could try googling for cold meals, salads, sandwiches, or even find a good cookbook at your library. And once you trust him with the microwave, leftovers save you from having to cook something else just for the afternoons. – Jefromi Mar 24 '12 at 1:41

I hate to barge in, but...isn't 10 years old a bit young to be left alone on a regular basis? I suppose it depends on the neighbourhood, and the culture... – Cerberus Mar 24 '12 at 4:08
As @Jefromi says, its too broad for the site, but you could also consider whole fruit, especially for a snack as opposed to a full meal. No prep work required, too. I'd suggest joining chat if you need help coming up with more ideas, but you'd need to create an account and get 20 "rep" do that... – derobert Mar 24 '12 at 4:17

You could easily mix up chicken, seafood, egg or tuna salad and leave it in the fridge. That way he can put some in bread or wrap. I always mix the mayonnaise/etc directly into the salad so its really simple to put on the bread. This all depends on what your kid likes to eat. For instance I like my pizza cold and my husband doesn't.... there may be other foods out there that are ok cold. Once when I didn't have access to a microwave I ate my leftover pasta (with alfredo sauce and chicken) cold and it was pretty good. Just change it up so they don't get tired of one idea.
