comment Stockpot double as beer brewing pot
Yes, but having a brew pot is TONS better if you want to use full grain. I've brewed from a 5 gal stock pot for a long time and would never go back to it no that I have a brew pot with filtered spigot.

comment Standardized symbols for marking food allergies / warnings?
Oh OK, I see what you mean. I could see using a v for vegan, but it could also mean vegetarian. I think people could get nitpicking with it.... Like tree nut free vs just nut free, or refined sugar free, etc. I actually know of a vegan ice cream shop that has a menu with a chile pepper for hot, a nut for includes nuts, a pictograph of wheat for contains gluten, etc. then you have to be clear that the symbol = has it, or with a X doesn't have it so its not ambiguous.

comment Standardized symbols for marking food allergies / warnings?
I'm not going to post an official reply, but as a vegan, I find I always have to read the ingredients, because there really aren't many labels, and they aren't used consistently. I read labels until I am comfortable with the food item, then i feel OK skipping it.

comment What's the minimum amount of oil for making popcorn?
@TFD, 1-2 tbsp does coat the bottom of my pan, which is large and shallow. Only one I've got.

comment vinegar in lollipops
Why don't you just eat vinegar and sugar... why make it into a candy? What is this recipe, anyway?

comment Minimum procedure for sterilizing mason jars for canning
It really depends on the amount of time the jars spend processing. And that link firstly doesn't work anymore and secondly is about pressure canning, which is a lot different from hot water canning.

comment using polenta to make hamburger
There are a whole bunch of recipes for veggie burgers using soy crumbles, TVP or seitan. Your polenta would make a delicious side dish, or I've seen recipes for polenta "fries." Just do a google search. Good luck!

comment Maillard in a Pressure Cooker
Using a lab vessel to cook food might not be the best idea as you never know what was used in it before you put food in it, not to mention the safety issues of using that much pressure.

comment Is it safe to eat smoked bacon without grilling?
I don't think this is addressing the original question of eating raw smoked bacon.

comment What is the best way to chip your butter when making biscuits?
Having no dishwasher, I find removing blockages easier than washing out a food processor by hand. But I do agree that otherwise it is quick.

comment Is there an alternative and less toxic way to clean an oven than using oven spray?
@Aaronut, wow, thanks for that info. I've seen a lot of homemade cleaning blogs suggest mixing them and have always done so. I guess I'll start using them separately!

comment Is there an alternative and less toxic way to clean an oven than using oven spray?
@Aaronut, that is a good point. I don't allow animal products in my kitchen, and usually use a mix of Dr. Bronner's soap and vinegar as an actual cleaning fluid.

Never underestimate the power of baking soda. It's amazing how much stuff you can clean with it. To add to this comment, I'd say make a baking soda paste (just add with some water) to work in with the sponge. It's a great abrasive.

comment How long can frosting with butter, powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, and milk, that is covered with fondant be left out of the refrigerator?
Also depends a lot on the temperature. Although I make vegan buttercream (using margarine and soymilk), it does have a tendency to get rather runny if it's hot and humid.

comment Is there any way to “Salt” unsalted cashew pieces?
If this is not the right way to do it, then why is it a good method? Also, what is the purpose of all of that butter, which seems a lot for a single bag of cashews.

Doesn't the boiling water rinse start cooking the rice?

comment Would cooked quinoa stay overnight?
Slightly OT but do you rinse your quinoa first to remove the saponins? I imagine some trace residues could be left behind, however, that could still trigger an allergy. I always wonder how much saponin is left after a vigorous soak.

comment Is there a difference in the ease of seasoning cast iron, forged iron, and carbon steel?
I always use vegetable based oils to season my cast iron and have had no problems.
