OK, have checked AGA temps. Base of the shelf used for latest bakes is 170 (and has been stable whenever I have checked). The middle of the tin would be 180.

nice results and better than an Electric "grill" built into oven.

as per nico, I used one for kneading and oven for cooking off. Since we didn't have a kitchenaid at the time (and yes, I am lazy) it was a good compromise and fairly easy to store. IMO a decent mixer is quicker overall and can make better bread. I did find that newer bread machines are fairly forgiving in terms of ingredients and result was always edible.

I had an oven thermometer. May be able to find it (last seen near dog)

Bit of a diversion, but why do you find Aga's inconsistent ? We have a night storage version so temp is maintained by a fan when needed.

As it's an Aga it doesn't strictly have set temperatures - but same oven used each time - so consistent temperature. Temperature more likely to be too high.

Added steps to questions. Eggs aren't foamed. Mixed into butter/sugar mix fairly slowly.

Ah, interesting. It is a new brand of Self Raising flour. Is there a fix ? Mixing should be OK. Same Kitchen Aid used throughout,

That sounds like the kind of chinese tea where you leave the leaves in the cup. Nice.
