comment Sugar/salt frosted around the top of a cup/mug
In place of rubbing the rim with the liquid, if you're doing this a lot, such as making trayfuls of cocktails or shots, you can simply dip the glass into a shallow saucer or plate of the liquid similar to what you do for the salt/sugar. One last tip; salting/sugaring only half the rim makes it easier for your guests/drinkers to get to the drink itself if they prefer not to have the extra salt or sugar taste, and it can add an aesthetic twist.

comment What is a tourne knife used for?
About the sharpening; I have a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker kit, which works very well for these oddly-shaped blades as well as coarsely-serrated blades like bread knives. As to how it works, a picture's worth a thousand words:foldingknivesreviews.com/images/2013/06/…

comment Shaking cocktails without bar equipment
Actually @Marti, the "Boston shaker" is a nice sturdy pint glass and a steel shell, not two stainless shells. Same idea though, and yes, most professional barkeeps shake and strain mixed drinks this way (much faster and easier to clean than a three-piece with strainer). If you want one, I recommend finding a nearby restaurant supply company; this is where actual foodservice establishments (including bars) get their tools.

comment Is there something wrong with the corn kernels that don't pop?
Another possibility for an unpopped kernel is that the shell is too thick. There's a fine balance; too thin and the kernel pops less energetically into a smaller puff, too thick and no matter how much water the germ has it'll never get hot enough to burst the shell before the whole thing blackens.
