comment Preheat the Dutch oven (and the oven itself) for No-Knead Bread? (experiment results)
If I understand the process correctly, the covered portion is to create oven spring. So if you are starting with less accumulated heat, it stands to reason that you need to bake it longer covered to achieve similar oven spring.

I did the salt thing with a little bit of oil to properly clean rest of the pan and then the dry high heat burn-off and it worked.

What's the downside of just letting it build and even seasoning on top of the black residue? It does not seem to affect the non-stick qualities of the pan.

The clean with salt thing is described elsewhere as a part of the "ritual" cleaning after use. How often do you do it?

They are the same pan taken seconds apart. I tilted in the second picture and used the flash to highlight the burnt on bits.

@MandoMando is the smoking point strictly relevant to seasoning though? You're pushing the oil way past smoking no matter what type you use are you not? Are you worried that the fumes while seasoning or the carbon layer left behind?

Carbon steel. I have a De Buyer. AFAIK the same seasoning principles apply. But again, it may be because it was newly seasoned. I guess in a few years I'll know if it's generally true.

If I'm saying something wrong, leave a comment. Anonymous downvotes is really douchebaggy, people.

Deglazing will damage seasoning. I did this on a CS pan I spent hours meticulously applying thin layers of oil on. Heartbreak.
