The bread isn't going hard - we keep it in a plastic airtight container, so that's not an issue.

It tends to go off in a week. We use yeast, strong white flour, butter, sugar, salt, water.

This is interesting, but I was really just looking at how cost efficient different fruits are. As shop bought jam is obviously cheaper than making your own, I was just interested in comparative cost efficiency. I think your footnote is the kind of answer I was looking for! Thanks!

Ahh, this makes sense. I was using a mixture of chocolates, some of which was low quality, plus I was trying to do it quickly so just used a pan on what I thought was low heat - maybe it wasn't low enough. Thanks.
