comment What is slow cooking and what it is good for?
@cinque: In no way does the puppy endorse anything that might burn your house down. Always use caution with things that produce heat, etc, etc. If your meat is not wholly submerged, it'd be better if you were around to flip it at some point. Otherwise, doesn't matter.

comment How long can I leave an uncooked steak out?
@hobodave: It's been 100+ here all week with 100% humidity. I feel like I could live in a walk-in freezer, no problem.

@Harlan: That's pretty much how I like it, actually. Fridge to plate in 10 minutes or less. Why buy steak if you're going to cook it to death? Might as well have a hamburger, and save a buck.

comment Storing Pizza Stone in Oven
@ManiacZX: The biggest problem with mine isn't recovery, it's that the thermostat is old, and causes the elements to kick on more often than normal. For the most part, it's not a big deal, but for bread or muffins, or whatever, I make sure to keep the stone in the oven.

comment What's the proper way to dispose of used fats & oils?
@Adam Shiemke: Yea, it doesn't degrade. The guy who comes up with an enzime that eats fat will make a mint cleaning arteries and drains.

The water and sewer guys refer to the resultant fat clogs as "Grease Logs" and, indeed, it's an accurate description. Better to just throw that junk off the back porch.

comment What is a cheap but good cut of beef for grilling?
@Joe: I don't even do it for economy, sadly. I just do it to see what looks good. My wife is just the opposite: she decides what she wants to make, and goes to the store to find that half of the ingredients can't be found. I go to the store and wander around like a vagrant until the menu assembles itself in my head...Sometimes you see a cut of meat or a vegetable that's so perfect you build the whole meal around it.
