Man, I would be reluctant to drop an egg into a deep pan of hot oil unless I was wearing a hot-flying-oil-proof suit! I am glad you came out of that OK.

@HenrikSöderlund they are sold as "peeled" onions.

@Jefromi no the outer layer is just as you would find it under the dry paper skin if you peeled it yourself. It is fleshy like the normally edible part. I usually peel off the first layer before using them though.
